Description: POSITION: Senior Design Engineer – Concrete Utility Poles REPORTS TO: Director of Engineering LOCATION: Tuscaloosa, AL 35401 OVERVIEW A leading manufacturer of concrete utility poles has an immediate opening for a Senior Design Engineer at its manufacturing plant in Tuscaloosa, AL. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Senior Design Engineer has responsibility for the structural analysis and design of the company’s standard utility pole products, i.e. pre-stressed concrete transmission and distribution structures.
Responsibilities: OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES The Senior Design Engineer has design responsibility for processing orders and general design engineering support for drafting and sales of the company’s concrete utility pole products. These responsibilities include the following: • Analyzing and designing products using the Finite Element Method and other structural design software, taking into consideration both public safety, manufacturing feasibility, and cost (balancing competitive pricing and profitability). • Interpreting customer specifications, customer needs, and marketing/sales needs. • Communicating engineering data to the customer and others, including itemizing cost-related requirements of a quote (e.g. weights, preparing engineering drawings, and evaluating “as-built”). • Recommending changes in design criteria, analysis methods, and drafting procedures and developing new methods and procedures, as appropriate, to address same. • Recommending tests to confirm theoretical designs when necessary, and planning and coordinating testing. • Communicating ideas about products and system improvements to encourage efficiency and build team morale. • Providing engineering assistance to the company’s production and sales teams.
Requirements: REQUIREMENTS • BS in Structural Engineering and licensure as a civil or structural engineer. • Five years of structural engineering experience, preferably in pre-stressed concrete structures. • Good working knowledge of computer-aided design (working knowledge of Finite Element Method software is a plus). • Ability to travel approximately 10 percent of the time.
Compensation: COMPENSATION Base salary of $75,000, plus performance bonus tied to company’s overall performance and comprehensive benefit package. Relocation allowance offered as appropriate.
